What to Expect

George Gershwin's An American in Paris is a seriously fun jazz-infused orchestral piece inspired by the composer's visit to Paris in the 1920's. The composer says of the piece, "My purpose here is to portray the impressions of an American visitor in Paris as he strolls about the city, listens to the various street noises, and absorbs the French atmosphere." Gershwin depicts a magical musical depiction of the city with sumptuous strings, saxophones, taxi horns and a myriad of orchestral colour. The Five Spirituals by Michael Tippett draw on the rich culture of African American music. Deeply moving, the soulful and expressive songs include well-known spirituals such as Go Down Moses, Deep River and Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen. The main theme from Beethoven's monumental Symphony No. 9 is world-famous as the beloved "Ode to Joy" melody. It was Beethoven's final symphony, which he composed while almost totally deaf. The symphony is regarded by many to be one of the greatest musical works ever written. Performed at this event with choir, orchestra and outstanding vocal soloists, this rendition of the symphony will be an unmissable experience.
