Grab your most terrifying fancy-dress costume and head down to Perth Concert Hall: WAAPA’s popular annual Halloween concert is back for 2020, to serenade the audience with spooky songs and symphonies. It’s no trick, they’ve got a real treat of a program planned! WAAPA’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble consists of all your favourite wind and brass instruments, including a special guest saxophone player, Matt Styles, who will perform the Australian premiere of Victoriano Valencia’s Three Colombian Scenes for Alto Saxophone and Band. The performance also includes a world premiere of a piece from WAAPA composer Jonathan Jie Hong Yang, who you may remember from Brave the Wave, which was featured in the recent reveal of the brand new WAAPA city campus. For a touch of Halloween madness, Godzilla Eats Las Vegas!, a fun and crazy showpiece by Eric Whitacre, invites the performers to wear wacky costumes, act out scenes and do their best to give the audience a laugh. Every performance is different, so watch out for what the WAAPA students plan to get up to!
“This is the most exciting and ambitions program that the Symphonic Wind Ensemble has ever put together,” says WAAPA’s Head of Woodwind and the music director for Spooktacular, Philip Everall. ‘We can’t wait to get into the Perth Concert Hall – it’s going to be a hoot!”
The concert finishes with a piece inspired by Homer’s epic Odyssey, bold and compelling and written by American composer John Mackey. The piece, Wine Dark Sea, features percussion, prepared pianos and harps, to create a soundscape unlike anything you’ve heard in an orchestra before. Spooktacular is at the Perth Concert Hall at 7:30pm, October 31. Tickets are available here, or through the Concert Hall via 9231 9999 or in person.
