Witness the extraordinary true stories of legends like Frank Zappa and Billie Eilish, or party along to an all-star Fleetwood Mac concert, as these stunning documentary-style films trail the raw and real lives behind the music we love.

ZAPPA

This is rock legend and musical iconoclast, Frank Zappa, like you have never seen before. This deep-dive biopic tells the tale of a controversial ‘culture warrior’, known for his satirical commentary on American society and the compositional complexity of his music. With a focus on Zappa’s personal and political life this is not just a retro trip into the mad era of the countercultural 60s; it is a contemporary glance into the profound and increasingly relevant art and politics of a man ahead of his time. Using delicately restored and previously unseen archived footage, director Alex Winter weaves together this very ‘human’ story with exclusive interviews from Zappa’s admirers, loved ones and collaborators. Featuring a comprehensive soundtrack including Zappa’s greatest hits and some less familiar B-side tracks, ZAPPA is a film for classic rock ‘n’ roll fans to “Freak Out!” over this year. Rated MA, this film is for a more mature audience. Showing at Luna Cinemas Leederville on February 19 and February 20 at 7.00pm. A 4.00pm show will also be available on February 21. Showing at Luna Outdoor February 21 at 8.00pm. Grab a ticket here.

Mick Fleetwood & Friends: Before the Beginning

This one-of-a-kind concert film features rock ‘n’ roll royalty like David Gilmore (Pink Floyd), Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Noel Gallagher (Oasis), Zak Starkey, Pete Townshend (The Who), Bill Wyman (The Rolling Stones), and John Mayall, Christine McVie & Jeremy Spencer (Fleetwood Mac). Lovers of music and the classic age of rock will be inspired as these top musicians honour one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame superstar, Peter Green. WHITE RIOT

Transport to London in the late-1970s where the punk movement was washing over the nation. This is more than the age of safety-pin piercings and spikey hair; it’s a time of deep political division, immigration fear and xenophobia. Winner of Best Documentary at London Film Festival, this film follows organisation Rock Against Racism, and fan-zine Temporary Hoarding. These organisations were founded to encourage rock music to be an example of change and a force against racism, following an offensive speech by Eric Clapton. With support from major names like The Clash and Steel Pulse, the magazine raises the voices of marginalised groups, and covers issues like immigration, Catholicism in the Irish conflict and police abuse of power. Rated MA, this is a film for mature audiences and will be showing from March 18 at Luna Leederville. Get your tickets here

Bohemian Rhapsody

This award-winning film celebrates the life and legacy of one of rock’s most famous names: Freddie Mercury. Starring Oscar-winning Rami Malek as Freddie this is Queen in their peak, with iconic scenes and songs to stomp your feet to. This film beautifully blends the triumphs of a young man with music in his soul and a passion for performance, with his harrowing, uphill battle with an AIDS diagnosis that would eventually claim his life. Join Luna Cinemas for a stunning biopic that will have you singing “is this real life or is this just fantasy?” Rated M this is an event for the bigger kids and adults, showing at 7.30pm on April 2 at Camelot Outdoor Cinema.
