Artist Lea Taylor has been announced as the winner of the inaugural The Art of Wellbeing competition for her work ‘Wellbeing in a Basket’.
Lea was chosen from over 20 finalists and was announced as the winner by Hon. Roger Cook MLA at a ceremony on Tuesday 14 November.
‘The basket demonstrates being in a really happy healthy space,’ said Lea. ‘This piece represents my work with the community and how I teach others to use art as a means of therapy and a path to wellbeing, while no materials go to waste.’
She’ll receive a share of profits form the auction of her piece as well as a formal mentoring programme with artists Janine Daddo and Wendy Hayden.
This is the first The Art of Wellbeing competition to run. It was set up by Richmond Wellbeing – a leading not-for-profit mental health organisation – to provide members of the West Australian aboriginal community with an opportunity to share their culture through their art.
Entrants were asked to submit their interpretation of ‘Wellbeing’ in their chosen artistic form. The works by the 22 finalists were then auctioned off to raise funds for Richmond Wellbeing’s Aboriginal mental health programs.
