Clever and heartfelt, the relatable humour of Kumail Nanjiani's The Big Sick makes for an entertaining and realistic romcom.
Directed by American comedian Michael Showalter (Hello, My Name is Doris), The Big Sick is an honest, entertaining film based on the real-life relationship between comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily Gordon. The story follows the pair through the early stages of their relationship as they try to figure out a way to overcome their cultural differences. Kumail meets grad-student Emily at one of his stand-up shows and they start a relationship. They part ways after an argument, but when Emily is taken to hospital after contracting a serious mysterious illness, Kumail realises he must face up to his feelings for her, and choose between respecting his family and following his culture, or pursuing his heart and the love of his life. It’s a romcom with a difference, but it still brings the laughs and tears you’d expect from a movie with this much emotional charge. Kumail plays himself, and gives a genuine performance that leaves you in no doubt that his portrayal of the story is as real as possible. He’s witty, hilarious and honest as he battles through the emotional maze that is his love for Emily. The real Emily co-wrote the screenplay with her husband, but is played by Zoe Kazan in the film, who gives an equally open and energetic performance. The Big Sick holds nothing back in telling of the pair’s emotional rollercoaster in the early days of their relationship, working relatable humour into important, heartfelt family moments. It’s a heady mix of intense drama and lighthearted comedy, all of which adds to the appeal of the story. The Big Sick is thought provoking, clever, and hilarious, but make sure you take a tissue. You know, just in case… The Big Sick is on general release now.
