The much-loved MINI British Film Festival returns to Perth on October 30 at Palace Cinemas, and the line-up is looking like a cinephile’s dream. Opening with Military Wives starring Kristin Scott Thomas, the festival closes with another star-studded gem, The Good Liar - boasting Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Helen Mirren. Luckily for Scoop readers, the resident film buff at Cinema Paradiso, Jacob Brinkworth, has made the top picks below.

The Personal History of David Copperfield

Comedic genius Armando Iannucci (The Death of Stalin, In The Loop) takes a break from his politically charged oeuvre to give his own hilarious and quietly moving spin on Charles Dickens’ highly lauded novel. Dev Patel leads an incredible ensemble cast including (but not limited to) Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw, Benedict Wong and Gwendoline Christie. A true crowd-pleaser in every sense. Sorry We Missed You

Ken Loach’s ferocious follow-up to his Palme D’Or winning I, Daniel Blake, the film follows a working-class family whose lives spiral out of control when their zero-hour contract jobs don’t allow for them to juggle professional duties and family troubles. A truly timely call for a change in Britain’s treatment of the working class.

Happy New Year, Colin Burstead

Ben Wheatley (Free Fire, Kill List) takes a break from his recent genre outings to make a small-scale pitch-black comedy chronicling the horrors of the Burstead family’s New Years celebration. Things between the already dysfunctional family reach fever-pitch once an estranged member of the family (Sam Riley) comes back. Tempers flare as everyone’s baggage unfolds. A fantastic British cast, including Neil Maskell, Charles Dance, Sam Riley and Hayley Squires all anchoring this chaotically entertaining and tense comedy. A must-see.

Don’t Look Now

Nicholas Roeg’s horror masterpiece gets a stunning 4K restoration. Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie are magnificent in this eerie rumination on grief. If you’re a fan of the film or yet to see it for the first time, the 4K restoration showing at the MINI British Film Festival is the best way to experience one of the most essential films in the horror genre. Horrible Histories: The Movie - Rotten Romans

Based off Terry Deary’s generation-defining novels and from the creators of the TV show adaptation, Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans is sure to be the same mix of highly-entertaining edutainment that has resonated with children for decades. Bring your kids for a laugh while also sneaking in a history lesson. The MINI British Film Festival returns to Perth from 30 October - 24 November presenting over 30 films at Palace Cinema Paradiso (Northbridge), Windsor Cinema (Nedlands) and Luna on SX (Fremantle).
