The school holidays are almost upon us and the team at WA Museum have put together a jam-packed program of activities taking place at sites across Perth & Fremantle. Explore the underwater world of sharks at the Maritime Museum and Yagan Square, or head over to the WA Shipwrecks Museum to reap a pirate's reward in the Treasure of the Golden Dragon trail.

Ocean Wonders: Exploring Sharks

Dates: 1 – 13 October 2019 Times: 10am – 2pm Cost: Free. Ages: All ages.

Have you ever wanted to get up close to a shark? Well here’s the chance to touch real shark skin! Even better, see how you measure up against life-size shark cut-outs and learn about the fascinating life cycles of sharks living across our coastline. Don’t forget to get a little creative too and create a shark species to include in our digital aquarium.

Shark Show: World of Wonders

Bookings: Essential for groups of 10+ on 1300 134 081 Who doesn’t love a game show, even when the topic is about one of the most misunderstood animals on Earth, sharks? Join us for a rollicking journey through the wonderful world of sharks. With interactive games, audience participation, and playful comedy, shark talk and shark fun is to be enjoyed by the young and the young-at-heart. Be sure not to miss this theatre show that the whole family will love!
Meet the Scientist
Dates: 1 October 2019 – Dr Glenn Moore, Curator of Fishes 2 October 2019 – Dr Mikael Siversson, Head of Earth and Planetary Sciences Times: 10.30am – 12pm Ages: 6+ years Cost: Free. Museum adult entry fees apply. Bookings: Essential for groups of 10+ on 1300 134 081 Have you ever wondered how we know so much about sharks? What role they play in the environment and how they interact with other ocean creatures? And how do scientists study them? Well, here’s your chance to find out! Come along and meet WA Museum scientists as they share their captivating stories about and knowledge of sharks, and how they study them and other amazing sea species! Dr Glenn Moore is the WA Museum’s Curator of Fishes. Glenn learned to scuba dive at 17 and was instantly hooked on sharks and other fish. Today he is a specialist in Aquatic Zoology. Join Glenn as he takes you ‘diving’ into the fascinating world of modern day sharks! Dr Mikael Siversson is Head of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the WA Museum. Mikael is a palaeontologist and specialises in fossil sharks – think giant megalodon! Did you know that sharks are older than dinosaurs? Join Mikael to find out more exciting information on the evolution of sharks. Don’t forget to bring your best science questions along, and let’s all talk sharks!

Treasure of the Golden Dragon

Some pesky pirates have raided the museum and hidden the Treasure of the Golden Dragon! Join in the Treasure of the Golden Dragon trail and take home a pirate’s share of the loot – your very own silvery coin. Craft a pirate’s treasure chest, and listen to some swashbuckling pirate tales in our storytelling sessions.

All Fired Up About Volcanoes
Venue: State Library of WA, Cultural Centre Dates: 28 September – 13 October 2019 Times: 10am – 2pm Ages: 5+ years Cost: Free There are plenty of ways to get you fired-up about volcanoes in this workshop. Check out the paper-mache volcano and volcanic rock models. Do you think you can make the volcano erupt? Yes, you can! Join us for some explosive fun!

Dates: 28 September – 13 October 2019 Times: 10am – 2pm Ages: 5+ years Cost: Free An arts and crafts activity like no other! The WA Museum friendly staff will help you make your very own paper crystal shape – and have fun finding out what kind of mineral it is! You even get to take your crystal shape home to display.
