WASO has seen the hit taken by the live music industry and raised us a masterpiece: 50 musicians playing alone in their homes, transformed into an orchestral performance of Ravel's Bolero that can only be described as world class.  Dubbed WASDO: West Australian Social Distancing Orchestra, the performers have clearly put a whole lot of time and effort into this. Taking timing whilst alone into consideration, developing this performance would have been a logistical nightmare. But WASO have pulled it off with grace, and if that doesn’t show how tight their band is, we don’t know what does.  As we all know, COVID-19 has put a stop to live music for the minute. But in the age of live-streaming, we’re thankful that WASO are still pumping out extraordinary symphonies for us all. In a time like this when we’re all bundled up in our homes, something seemingly small like engaging with music can be a make or break for our mental health.  WASO also released a ‘mashup’ video performance to commemorate Easter, and with this performance they let us in on a little secret as to how they record it individually with such precision, “this wasn’t live. Each player played their part separately to a metronome and then we arranged them together after.”  So there you have it! Even though we’re missing the days of live WASO performances, the next best thing is pretty damn good.
