Artworks features at Aboriginart Indigenous Fine Art Gallery this season.
1 Lorna Fencer Napurrula
Kangaroo Tucker | $13,750
Acrylic on linen, 145x130cm
Artist | Lorna Fencer Napurrula was born around 1920 at Yartulu Yartulu, near the Granites in the Tamani desert. Sadly, she passed away in December 2006. Lorna was a Warlpiri speaker and a senior artist from Lajamanu, in the central Northern Territory.
Artwork | This painting depicts some of the vegetation that the kangaroos feed off. Creating with bold splashes of colour, and demonstrating an energetic enthusiasm that belied her advancing years, Lorna was never afraid to use her paint.
2 Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi
Grandmother's Country | $6750
Acrylic on canvas, 175x95cm
Artist | Gabriella was born in 1967 at Mt Allan in the Northern Territory. She is the eldest daughter of the late great Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri. Gabriella has since emerged from her famous father's long shadow to become a highly regarded, internationally recognised artist in her own right.
Artwork | This amazing painting depicts certain aspects of her grandmother's country by displaying myriad iconic symbols signifying people, water holes, landscape formations and various types of bush tucker. These are all portrayed with a synogistic flair that Gabriella has made her own.
3 Josie Petrick Kemarre
Bush Berry Dreaming | $4750
Acrylic on canvas, 150x90cm
Artist | Josie is a senior and respected Utopian artist who has been painting ever since she was a teenager. She paints her Dreamings in a bold, innovative dotting style. Some of her stories are inherited from her late grandmother, the one and only Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
Artwork | Laying down close up to the canvas, Josie paints in a beautiful multi-tiered approach with each coloured dot intrinsically linked to the next to form layers of contrasting tones that mesmerisingly give the impression of sinking into the painting.
4 Kathleen Petyarre
Thorny Mountain Devil Lizard | $5250
Acrylic on linen, 100x100cm
Artist | Born around 1940 in the Utopia region, Kathleen is one of the most collectable contemporary artists in Australia today. As a full sister of the equally renowned artist Gloria Petyarre, and a great niece of the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye, art has always been in her blood. In 1996, Kathleen won the prestigious Telstra Award.
Artwork | Kathleen has painted a symbolic map depicting the territory of the mountain or thorny devil lizard. Being a survivor of the harsh desert terrain, Kathleen has adopted this lizard as one of her totems because she believes that she possesses the same qualities. Painted in a stunning minimalistic dotting technique, this work indicates why her top auction price is currently $96,000.
