There is no better place to enjoy a boutique beer than Fremantle – and in the last few years, several new breweries have joined the old favourites to provide beautiful locations for that Sunday sundowner, after work drink, or long-awaited catch up with friends. Here are a few of our favourites.
Gage Roads
Opened in January, the brand new Gage Roads brewery in the port of Fremantle is the most recent addition to the Perth brewery scene. While the venue is new, Gage Roads has been a firm favourite since they established in 2002, producing a range of local favourites, including the ever-popular Single Fin.
With a playground for children, a beer garden, and a light and airy atmosphere, Gage Roads welcomes all, even dogs, to soak up the sunshine by the harbour. The food menu is extensive and there is a wide variety of beers on tap. Open from 11am until late every day, the atmosphere is relaxed and walk-ins are welcome. Gage Roads is also a perfect segue for travellers returning from Rottnest and visitors to the WA Maritime Museum.
Little Creatures
Another gem on the water, Little Creatures Brewing is located on Fremantle Harbour in a massive building that was once historically used for farming crocodiles. A much-loved beer producer with beer pumped straight from brewery to tap, the brewing process and kitchen are both open for the public to see, creating a wonderful feeling of space. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun with beer flowing and food for both dine in and take-away services. Little Creatures is open Monday to Sunday, 11am to late, but doesn’t accept bookings, so we suggest you wander down and take your chances.
Running with Thieves
Founded by friends with a passion for beer and travel, Running with Thieves is a chic, open-style, industrial venue that encompasses the energy of its increasingly popular South Fremantle location.
Over twenty years of brewing experience is reflected in a mainstay collection of full-flavour beers and a seasonal rotation including some more unusual flavours, popular ginger ales and alcoholic seltzers, their easy-drinking beers compliment a new Pan-Asian styled menu.
With a unique focus on a ‘counter-culture’ environment, Running with Thieves has the advantage of being employee-owned and run, making it an inclusive and easy-going place to enjoy a crisp brew. Open Monday to Thursday 11am to 9pm, and Friday to Sunday 11am until late.
Union Brewery and Distillery
The Union Brewery and Distillery ‘Union’ is located in the Sunshine Harvester Works, a renovated warehouse space with an eclectic mix of food and drink vendors to explore. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed, more like the Fremantle markets than a food hall, offering everything from burgers, pizza and dumplings to Fatboi Brownies and delicious Italian-style gelato.
Union offers a wide range of fresh brews on tap, from malty lagers and pilseners to their darker Belgian-style beers. The tasting paddles are a popular way to sample the menu, as is their $10 pint happy hour on Wednesdays between 5pm and 6pm. Crafted by master brewer Steve Ryan (of Old Coast Road brewery fame), Union also offers gin and other spirits and is open Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm and Sunday from 3pm to late.
