Winter is coming, and we at Scoop can’t think of a better way to escape the cold than by cosying up beside a rustic woodfire oven as you tuck into everyone’s favourite comfort food. We can thank the sun-bronzed gods of Naples for bringing us pizza, and these Perth pizzerias are certainly paying homage to them by serving up deliciously warming woodfired pizzas. Using fresh ingredients and homemade sauces, our top picks offer a wide range of toppings and trimmings so you’ll be spoilt for choice no matter the season.

Monsterella

Owing its name to a heart-warming family anecdote involving mozzarella, Monsterella‘s woodfired pizzas are sure to warm you up on a blustery winter’s evening. Handmade according to long-standing tradition, their pizza dough is left to rise for 48 hours and their pizza sauce is bursting with the recognisable, classic flavour of San Marzano tomatoes. One to try is their Milliano – featuring creamy buffalo mozzarella, sweet caramelised onions, succulent Italian sausage and a sprinkling of oregano, all drizzled with truffle oil. Bellissima!

Dough Pizza

Welcoming you into their retro-diner-inspired parlour, you’ll be greeted with a choice of bases and a wide selection of toppings at Dough Pizza. If it’s a traditional tomato base you’re after, their San Daniele Margherita pizza is a classic; with deliciously salty prosciutto, garden rocket and a scattering of parmesan shavings. Of the white sauce variety, the Cinderella may be the belle of the ball; adorned with aged asiago cheese, grilled pumpkin and plump cherry tomatoes.

Bistro Bellavista

Conveniently located in East Perth, Bistro Bellavista are proud winners of the Kleenheat Gold Plate award for Perth’s best pizza of 2018. If you need any more convincing, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are their special pizza, pasta and parmigiana nights, where you can enjoy any of their award-winning pizzas for much less coin. Try their salsiccia e tartufo; a decadent combination of smoked scamorza cheese, black truffle and herbed Italian sausage. Or if you consider seafood on pizza a match made in heaven, Bellavista source West Australian tiger prawns for their gamberi pizza, which comes drizzled with basil pesto and topped with baby bocconcini.

Woodpeckers

If you’re feeling peckish for the classics, Woodpeckers in Subiaco is the place to go. Woodfired to crispy perfection in their stone oven, their menu features tomato or mozzarella bases and winning combinations of family-favourites; whether you think pineapple on pizza is weird or wonderful. For the meat-lovers out there, they serve up a delicious option topped with salami, bacon, fennel-infused Salsiccia sausage and Italian herbs.

Sopranos Pizzeria Ristorante

Housed in a beautiful 20th Century Heritage-listed building on Mill Point Road, Sopranos welcome you in to enjoy their pizzas made with aged Italian-flour dough in a unique rustic setting. Broken down into vegetarian, meat-topped and seafood, their menu boasts a wide woodfired selection that includes the occasional special such as their fig, gorgonzola and prosciutto pizza. Our advice? Don’t skip the al salmone pizza, which comes topped with smoked salmon, zesty lemon, capers and sour cream.
