When the hospitality sector all but shut down, Perth sisters Liz and Carla decided to transition the family-owned business from wholesaling to providing fresh, locally grown fruit & veg direct to the public. The family already ran a wholesale business in fruit and veg supplying local hospitality venues such as The Camfield, The Stables Bar and more. In just a couple of weeks, they got their produce delivery service up and running, ensuring people who have been unable to leave home have access to fresh produce. Boxes come in medium ($40) and family-sized ($70) with enough produce to last groups of 4 and more through the week. What you’ll get in the box changes from week to week depending on what’s in season and available, but they always come with staples such as tomatoes, carrots, potatoes and onions. On Monday they finalise what’s in the box for the coming week, and will post on their Facebook page to let you know what to expect. At the moment, mandarins are coming into season, so we can expect lots of juicy citrus over the coming weeks. There will also be a variety of apples, including beautiful red bravo and granny smith apples. Boxes are packed fresh every morning, ready for delivery to suburbs throughout Perth that afternoon. Delivery is contactless, meaning they’ll send you a message to let you know when it’s coming, and drop it on your doorstep. If you have any special dietary requirements or requests, you can leave notes for the team and they’ll do their best to accommodate. Any food not sold by the end of the week that is still fresh is picked up by FoodBank, Tranby Homeless Centre and Second Bite for distribution to the needy, so nothing goes to waste! “It’s a way to help producers sell their produce direct to consumers,” Liz commented, also emphasising that they have been able to maintain regular work for their casual staff, many of whom are international students unable to receive support for loss of employment. These boxes are also great value, and you’ll actually end up saving money. Liz and Carla visit supermarkets regularly to ensure that prices are less than you’ll find in the shops. It cuts out the middleman, so that more money goes straight to local producers and farmers. The response they have received has been overwhelming, with new orders flocking in every week. They are currently looking at expanding to include other staples, sourced from local WA producers, such as milk from down south, eggs, and bread from their local bakery, Glory Box. For those still going out for groceries, the warehouse opens to the public on a Sunday as Walcott Street Markets. There, you can pick up a selection of good value fruit & veg for a reduced price. Their story is a great example of how some businesses are adapting under COVID-19, and while it might not be as lucrative as the wholesale business, it’s enough to get by while supporting both growers and the local community.
