With Krispy Kreme (finally) making its way to Perth, it’s a wonder we’re not all obese! But the franchise has nothin’ on the holey goodness of these locally made doughnuts.
1. Orange & Turmeric
The coffee crew at Perth's beloved Top Dup have turned their sights on something altogether more tasty: doughnuts. It's hard to choose a favourite amongst the myriad options. There's Strawbs & Cream, Mango Chantilly, Rhubarb & Custard Crumble, and – naturally – the Long Mac, which is stuffed with espresso custard. One doughnut that stands apart is the Orange & Turmeric, whose velvety spiced cream plays sweet against savoury to produce a doughnut that's
a little unconventional and a lot tasty.
Find at: Mo Espresso, Max & Sons Coffee, and Typika Roasters, to name a few.
2. Doughnuts with milk jam and peanut parfait
Ok, take what you think you know about St Michael 6003 in Highgate (we're guessing it's something along the lines of, "You mean that fancy degustation restaurant I have neither the money nor wardrobe to dine at?") and forget it. On Friday and Sunday mornings, the fine diner turns into a casual brunch joint cranking out some seriously fun dishes. Our favourite comes piled high with three sugar-coated doughnuts, squares of milk jam and a rich peanut-buttery parfait to dip it all in. Warning: this breakfast contains a week's worth of calories. It's still worth every one.
Find at: St Michael 6003, Highgate, on Fridays and Sundays.
3. Traditional Blackberry
Using WA organic wheat flour and rice bran oil, the blackberry jam-filled doughnut from Levi's Doughnuts has won the hearts and bellies of Fremantle Market goers for the last seven years. These fluffy, decadent doughnuts ooze flavour, and are baked fresh throughout the day. Ex-chef-turned-doughnut-maker Levi has really nailed the traditional, European-style doughnut, and we dig the retro canteen-style kiosk.
Find at: The Freo Markets, Fridays to Sundays.
Other doughnuts we love: Hole Food Doughnuts, created by master of desserts Briony Whitton, and available at the Mr Drummond's Foods stall at the Subi Markets on Saturday mornings.
