After almost a year of campaigning, Picabar has finally been saved! The popular Northbridge bar and rendezvous spot near the steps at the Perth Cultural Centre has just announced that their lease has been secured for the next five years, with the option to extend this to ten. The new lease was negotiated between the Perth Theatre Trust (PTT) and Picabar. Last year, the PTT took over management of the building housing both Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) and Picabar. According to the new lease agreement, Picabar's owners Brian and Conor Buckley will retain control of the much-loved venue. Acknowledging the significance of the outcome, Minister for Culture and the Arts David Templeman commented "We acknowledge the great love that the people of Perth have for this bar and the energy it provides to the Perth Cultural Centre." Occupying an important space in the heart of the Perth Cultural Centre, both PICA and Picabar play a role in bringing the community together. Perth MLA John Carey said "This is great news for the staff and management at Picabar, as well as the many patrons that frequent the venue, who came out and demonstrated their strong support of it". He also mentioned that the decision to renew Picabar's lease has value in activating the space and adding to a relaxed, social atmosphere in the Perth Cultural Centre. Picabar lease-holder Brian Buckley announced that "This is fantastic news. We're over the moon about it and excited to be part of the Cultural Centre at a really exciting time." Picabar is located in the former Perth Old Boys School building at 53 James Street in Northbridge. Time to pop on down for a celebratory pint!
