Subiaco's hottest new must-try venues

From fine wine and Mexican classics to Asian-fusion and craft beers brewed on the Hay Street strip, Subiaco is the place to be for up-and-coming venues. Here’s our run-down on the newest and best Subi spots.

La Condesa


La Condesa is the brainchild of Perth bar tycoon Clint Nolan, and offers seasonal fruit cocktails alongside a delicious Modern Mexican menu filled with locally sourced seafood and produce. Sitting just off Rokeby Road on Hay Street, this newly-opened space also promises a bar stocked with 100% agave tequilas and mezcals. With small plates, sharing options and tacos available to mix and match, La Condesa serves a menu filled with fan faves (the corn ribs are a hit) at a very reasonable price. Open for dinner from Wednesday to Sunday.

Lums


Lums Wine Bar revitalises the old EA Lums Grocery and General Store (with a history stretching back to the 1920’s) to create a cosy, intimate bar space with a range of artisan wines available. Enjoy wines like Nebbiolo and Pet Nat with their range of bites made to be enjoyed with a glass of vino, with charcuterie and sharing plates, or head down on a Friday for a woodfire pizza made in-house. Another fantastic venue from the team that created the ever-popular Bark Subiaco – Lums is open from 4pm to 11pm on Tuesday through Thursday, 12pm to 12am on Fridays and Saturdays, and 12pm to 7pm on Sundays.

Koba


Promising a taste of Asia with an Australian spin, Koba opened their modern bar and restaurant on Rokeby Road in October. Serving a large list of beer, wine and spirits, the highlight of the bar are the cocktails (we recommend the ‘Much Love’ if you love all things lychee and prosecco!). The food menu uses locally-sourced produce in traditional-style dishes, and mixes up flavours with some more inventive combos like matcha soba and flaming jumbo prawns. Open Sunday to Thursday – 10am to 10pm, and 10am until late on Friday and Saturday.

Golden West


WA may be Australia’s craft beer capital, but some of the best beers are brewed right in the heart of Subiaco. Opened in early 2022, Golden West carries on the historical legacy of the Golden West Aerated Water Company founded in the 1890’s – and now brews modern-style pale ales and lagers (their Western Red Ale is a fan-favourite). With a cosy interior and beer garden that’s perfect for summer, Golden West’s beers are perfect to be enjoyed alongside their South Asian and Aussie-style menu. Open from 11am, Wednesday to Sunday.

Shui


Coming soon to the old Funtastico site on Rokeby Road, Shui promises ‘cosmically balanced cuisine’ brought together by hospitality hot-shots Benny Tua and Leigh Power (of Old Synagogue and Mechanics Institute fame). Keep your eye out on Shui’s socials for more on this bold, modern Asian fusion restaurant that’s sure to make a splash in Subi.

Il Locale


Scarborough’s favourite pizzas are making their way to Hay Street, with a second location recently announced. Scheduled to open in early January, this pizzeria will see hand-made bases and Neapolitan-style ingredients served on a brand new outdoor pizza terrace. They’ll also be open for a lunch time slice – keep an eye on the Il Locale social media for more updates.
