Through a smooth blend of fine detailing and architectural elements, this Hamptons-style design is right at home in Cottesloe.
COTTESLOE
Responding to the specific aesthetic brief of the clients, Craig Steere Architects (CSA) and David Reid Homes worked together to create this spectacular home, reminiscent of a Long Island (or 'Hamptons style') beach house, with an Australian verve.
The rectangular lot incorporated a seven-metre slope from east to west, allowing for the entry treatment on either side to be very distinct; the eastern side is an intimate approach to the home, while the western side opens completely towards the beach views.
Combining generous proportions, fine detailing and architectural expression of traditional character homes, the design puts a strong focus on creating interesting and inviting internal spaces.
Highlight windows run along the perimeter of the west-facing main living, dining and kitchen spaces, exploiting natural light, while a courtyard also injects the spaces with additional northern light. Large timber sliding doors stack away to allow the zones to open out completely, thus blurring the lines of interior to the exterior.
Custom-designed joinery, distinctive wall panelling and white tongue-and-groove ceilings in selected areas create dramatic living zones that are bright and airy. The interior spaces have a strong connection with the outdoors, with sheltered exterior balconies and a classic poolside deck to the central courtyard, overlooking the outdoor entertaining areas.
Architectural elements such as expansive rooms, verandahs, and prominent timber window shutters underpin the Hamptons theme.
Accessed internally yet jutting externally, the day bed takes direct inspiration from a Moroccan lamp. The client had supplied CSA with a candle, and a repeating pattern from the motif was transcribed into laser-cut feature screens that surround the day bed. At dusk, the day bed glows like a lantern.
The resulting home sits impeccably within its coastal Cottesloe location, boasting understated style with subtle hints of Morrocan and French design accents, bringing some of the clients' personality into the spaces.
