A cushion is not just a cushion – to JBL Design, it’s a gem of colour and texture that adds just the right highlight to a room. It’s a philosophy that has led JBL Design to become a multi award-winner for residential and commercial interiors.

COTTESLOE

Homeowners are often afraid to experiment with colour, playing it safe with neutral tones, but JBL Design proves liberal use of colour can present stunning results when an expert is on board.

A collaboration between architect Martin Grounds, stylist Malvina Stone and the interior design of JBL Design, this Cottesloe home does this and more.

The clients were keen on the idea of a home full of colour and texture, desiring spaces that were creative, stylish and inspiring. A sitting room is a standout in the program, where JBL Design manufactured and designed built-in furniture that dictated the layout. Supervision during the construction of the cabinetwork was critical, with JBL Design's stipulation of the exact Dulux colour required for the satin finish.

The brass lights were ordered from the US by JBL Design, after Judith Barrett-Lennard set her sights on the Fred Juuls NY lights at the NYCx DESIGN exhibition in New York last year. She also spotted the Jan Kath rug at the design fair, but could order this through Cadrys in Australia. The purple velvet seat, which doubles as a comfortable sofa bed, is a Zepel fabric and the cushions are Designer Guild and Romo black edition. The armchair was then custom-made in Melbourne using a Sustainable Living fabric. Other features include the Phillip Jeffreys wallpaper, and lamp from MRD with a replaced shade using a Jim Thompson fabric.

PEPPERMINT GROVE

Fresh and inviting, paying respect to natural materials and colours of the environment, this home represents the clients beautifully.

The young, vibrant professional family of six (and their Lakeland terrier dog),
wanted a kitchen and living area redesign that established a warm and welcoming ambience, with 'family-proof' finishes in high-traffic areas.

Highlights include the lush Calvin Klein floor rug that anchors the lounge, kitchen cupboards in Dulux Grand Piano lacquer finish, stone benchtops, and bespoke dining table, blue leather sofas and side table all designed and produced by JBL Design.

The accent Jardan yellow stool, and Missoni, Romo and Elitis cushions add pops of colour to the space, bringing a feel of the outdoors in.

MINORA

Judith Barrett-Lennard, the mastermind behind JBL Design, has a deep understanding of colour and materials that is second to none. Her formal training, knowledge and experience in design, selection of finishes, fabrics and furniture is as comprehensive as it is discerning.

This is realised in her complete design fit-out of this Gillon & Boshart renovation in Minora. Judith's finely honed instinct and ability to tune into the client's own style and requirements was paramount in meeting their brief and budget.
Kitchen elements chosen include Calacatta oro marble to the benchtops, pillar and splashbacks, and the four contemporary tan leather bar stools.

In the adjoining dining room/lounge, jarrah floors were installed in order to simulate the original flooring. The client's dining chairs were reupholstered, and a custom four-metre dining table in cherry wood was designed and produced by JBL Design. Adjacent is a custom sideboard with antique mirror details. In the lounge, the sofas, coffee table and floor rug were custom-designed, and the cushions are James Hare silk.

In the master suite, a cream palette was employed with a Dulux Grand Piano lacquered finish to the walls. The bedhead with a buttoned insert was designed and produced by Judith, and the bed frame in the headboard was designed to accommodate a restricted space. The floor rug was custom-made with a silk and wool blend, and the cushion is in a Jim Thompson silk print. The bedroom chair was produced in Sydney with GP&J Baker cushion. JBL Design was even responsible for the design of the charming cottage-style garden, and alfresco to mirror the style of the home.
