Old-fashioned customer service is the key to success for family-owned business Northshore Landscape Construction.

Outdoor areas are a large part of Australia's culture, so to have the privilege of designing and constructing these spaces is an honour for the husband-and-wife owners of Northshore Landscape Construction.

Jamie Wendt, a landscaper, and Melisa Wendt, a landscape designer, started their business in 2004, and it has since grown to a team of 12 qualified landscape designers, tradespeople and landscape apprentices.

Unlike many competitors, the company handles all aspects of design, construction, engineering, surveying and council liaison in house. This guarantees landscaping works are managed to perfection, and the client's journey with Northshore Landscape Construction is professional, timeless and pain-free.

SCARBOROUGH

Listening carefully to clients, and understanding their lifestyle and needs is a must in any project Northshore Landscape Construction designs.

The client at this Scarborough property was seeking a tropical, low-maintenance garden that boasted a small plunge pool, feature entrance, patio, carport, storeroom, new driveway and lighting design. An ex-AFL player, he also wanted to maximise grass space in the yard to kick the footy about with his son, and for the original yard to be dropped by one metre so the front and back were on the same level.

At the front of the home, the driveway incorporates feature exposed aggregate strip complete with sensor lighting, which lights up the garden in intervals at night.

Moving towards the rear, the garden is filled with frangipanis, golden cane palms, black tropical canna lilies, small low-maintenance grasses, philodendrons, and ipomoea for an explosion of colour.

Star Jasmine is planted on stainless steel cable to border the decorative timber screens on the wall in the pool area.

Fremantle Stone silver grey granite paving is used in the pool area and Atlas Kimberley Pave paving in pewter is employed on the driveway.

GOOSEBERRY HILL

Creating an attractive, low-maintenance garden was the main focus in this Gooseberry Hill renovation.

The owners had appointed a pool contractor prior to Northshore Landscape Construction's arrival, to decrease the size of the existing infinity edge pool and remove the infinity edge, due to the large amount of maintenance required.

When Melisa, Jamie and the team came on board the project, the task was to create a waterwise garden suited to the heat experienced in Perth's hills, and to the property's lack of protection, perched as it is on the edge of a scarp overlooking Perth city.

There was only one narrow pedestrian pathway down the side of the home to allow access for all equipment and machinery, so the team cut
away and removed damaged sections of the wall that would be seen from the lower level, and replaced these with hardy reconstituted limestone. To ensure the project was cost-effective for the clients, they also incorporated a grey deck daybed in front of an existing planter on one side of the yard to hide the cracks and damage below the decked area.

In keeping with the low-maintenance brief, artificial turf was placed near the pool zone.

The existing spa was then linked to the pool with a row of paving steppers surrounded by polished river stone.

All gardens are enclosed by hardscapes such as limestone or brickwork, to prevent any messy edges.

The plants selected were hardy, heat-tolerant and waterwise for the exposed area, and the feature garden surrounding the spa has weed matting below polished river stones to help combat weed growth.

The owners also wanted to reuse some of their old pool paving, which was mixed with new pavers to prevent a definite line between old and new.
