Chelsea Flower Show
In May 2013, Matthew helped create a show garden at the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show in the United Kingdom.
As lead designer, he worked with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and main sponsor Bartholomew Landscapes to create a stunning horticultural showpiece, Stoke-on-Trent's Story of Transformation.
The garden was designed to be distinctive and characteristic of the city, acknowledging Stoke's rich heritage, while drawing attention to new and contemporary developments.
This was achieved through the combination of materials and plantings to establish distinct areas that are reflective of the city's history.
The garden room features a rusted, skeletal structure, inspired by the iconic bottle kilns of The Potteries, and reminiscent of the city's industrial past. Hundreds of handcrafted bone china 'flower bricks' cover the decaying kiln structure.
The living wall is a tapestry of plants depicting the beautiful Peak District, which forms a backdrop to the garden and city. The steel pergola and timber structure links the front and back of the garden and provides shade to the path and seating area.
In the sunken seating area, digitally printed photographic images of stone and ceramic flowers were laid onto glazed tiles while a spectacular tiled tabletop depicting plants was exhibited in the garden.
The water features, through a series of tiered pools, depict travels from chaos in the upper pool to a still, reflective middle pool, before cascading down to a rill surrounding the 'Moorcroft' feature table and completing its journey.
Zuccari
Canopy Designed Exteriors was commissioned by Zuccari to create a showcase garden retreat for its Malaga showroom.
Zuccari is a wholesale outlet for a range of natural stone, and travertine and basalt feature strongly in this garden because of the increasing focus on these products in landscaping projects.
Wanting to give customers a glimpse of what can be achieved, the Zuccari brief required the use of available space on either side of its portico to show how even a small area can be transformed. The company also wanted to demonstrate the endless possibilities when creating another world in such a confined space.
Intriguing portal frames were constructed from basalt to define an outdoor 'reflection' space, while subtly forming a relationship with the letter Z.
A path of stepping stones creates a sense of adventure while demonstrating a range of surface finishes using slab and tile formats.
The shape and form of the portal frames is particularly eye-catching because they appear to defy conventional engineering in terms of structure and support.
With the 'reflection' garden nestled to the left of the portico, a point of interest was required on the right to complete the composition.
An artistic piece named Earth Unfolding was created in response, inspired by the mass of uncut, unfinished slab ends in the warehouse.
To finish, movement was introduced with a sheet of water falling from the horizontal beam on one of the portal frames, complemented with a stone sculpture on the other side of the stepping stones.
The striking garden creates a big impact in such as small space while also building a transition for customers as they enter the building, leaving the outside world behind.
