As we all know by now, the World Health Organisation has declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic. As individuals, it can be hard to know how to react to a situation like this. It’s unprecedented, and the trickle-down effects are only going to become more and more apparent. With gatherings of over 500 people cancelled, it looks like it is set to be a quiet week in the world of events. There are still some places open, however, including smaller capacity venues and activities, so if you need something to take your mind off the craziness, here are a few ideas. Make sure you practice good hygiene if you go, and do not attend if you have cold or flu-like symptoms.

Farmers Markets

We still have to eat, and now is a better time than ever to start eating healthy. Several farmers markets are still open, offering locally grown, fresh and organic produce. In light of current events and their affects on the state’s economy, there’s never been a better time to support local businesses. So, instead of bulk buying at a chain-supermarket, try out some local producers and support Aussie growers as you boost your immune system. Our top picks are the Subiaco Farmers Market and the Stirling Farmers Market, but there are lots of local markets across Perth, so why not check out what’s in your area?

Rooftop Movies

As Rooftop Movies is a small venue, they have announced that they will be staying open until further notice. However, they will be taking extra precautions to keep us safe! Stamps will no longer be used to reduce contact, hand sanitiser stations will be available throughout the venue and staff will be required to use gloves when handling food. With less than 2 weeks until their season ends, this is your last chance!

Small Music Venues

Venues with a capacity of less than 500 people are remaining open until further notice. While the larger concerts and festivals have been cancelled, now’s the time to support local musicians and bands who are doing it tough in the brutally competitive music industry, plus, you’ll get to see them in a more intimate setting! Smaller venues include Northbridge icon, The Bird, The Sewing Room, Mojo’s in Freo, or the newest live music venue, Lyric Lane in Maylands.

Art Galleries

Hallelujah, both PICA and AGWA are remaining open! PICA has announced they are implementing more frequent and vigorous cleaning standards, and hand sanitiser will be available to anyone entering the venue. Although Chalkroom is closed for the season, you can still pop down to see the last weeks of their exhibitions Thunderhead and Hudson Valley Ruins.

Perth’s Beaches

With lots of venues on lockdown, this is the perfect time to ditch the typical Cottesloe swim and check out one of Perth’s more secluded beaches, such as Bailey Beach in Trigg or Mosman Beach in North Freo. As they’re a wide-open area with a typically smaller crowd, you can keep that 1m (social) distance from everyone and go for a relaxing dip!
