Chris Wheeldon from RTRFM gives us an insight into the best local gigs and festivals to catch in Perth this April and May, as well as the emerging artists to watch out for.
April and May are gearing up to be pretty big in the world of WA Music. First we need to talk about In The Pines, RTRFM’s flagship WA music event celebrating its 25th year on Sunday April 29. Catch the sounds of Abbe May, FOAM, Furchick, Umpire, Mile End, Lucy Peach and a whole heap of other WA bands. In The Pines has been on the WA music festivals scene over the last 25 years and it has affirmed itself as one of the best days on the WA music calendar.
Live Gigs Coming Up
New Talk (FKA Rag n Bone) launch their new single on Saturday April 21st, where they will play their first show since their name change at The Bird. A truly epic gig will take off at PS Art Space in Fremantle with Selfless Orchestra, the brainchild of Steven Aaron Hughes. This is a multi media extravaganza with a 13 piece band playing in a warehouse surrounded by projections matching the music. Ruby Boots returns to Perth for a headline show at The Rosemount Hotel on May 11. She has spent the last couple of years in Nashville writing an album and touring the US. Turnstyle also return to the stage on May 18 at Four Five Nine; they are the kings of the casio sound in Perth and are currently in the throws of writing a new record.
Check out Free Spirits #11 at Mojos on May 5 - a collective of free thinkers who bring amazing music to your ears. Melbourne band Midlife are coming over with their free flowing rhythmic magic, supported by The Barundi Peace Choir and Bella Ndayikeze.
Chris Wheeldon's Top Picks
There are always a whole heap of good bands coming out of Perth but a couple that have been grabbing my attention over the last few months are:
Figurehead: These guys have only just turned 18 and they launched their new single down at YMCA HQ this month. It has been great to see them grow as a band and they are now at that point where they are ready to step into 18 plus gigs.
Cold Meat: They are set to launch a new single at the end of May and are the finest purveyors of DIY punk in Perth.
Montana Wildhack: A super new band that fit beautifully into the a vibe of 90’s indie band. There is a lot of polish to happen with this band but the starting points are great.
Cow Cablin: a producer of some fine deep house music. He has yet to play a live set, but his productions are out of this world.
