This special screening of Stanley Kubrick’s monumental sci-fi 2001: Space Odyssey takes place in the WA Museum beneath a seven-metre replica of the moon, the centrepiece of the currently running ‘To the Moon’ exhibition. Even without an immersive venue, the film’s visual impact and enigmatic storytelling has left audiences entranced since its release in 1968. The plot considers the evolution that has led to the development of man and further evolution that man might undergo in the future by following an expedition to the moon, Jupiter and beyond, after a mysterious artefact is discovered beneath the lunar surface.

4. Lake Mungo
Luna Leederville
Regarded as one of Australia’s best psychological horror movies, Lake Mungo is a story of a missing girl who was presumed to have drowned in Lake Mungo, but her grieving family are then subjected to all forms of paranormal activity, including hauntings and apparitions which lead them back to the lake. Presented stylistically as a documentary report mixed with home movies, Lake Mungo is not so much a focus on direct, traditional horror, but a slow-burning story of pain, loss and a terrible reality with overtones of doom and the imminence of death.

Luna Leederville
Winning awards at numerous festivals including Fantasia 2023, Phoenix Film Festival 2023, MidWest Weird Fest 2023 and several more, Hundreds of Beavers is one of the funniest, most bizarre and visually imaginative films of recent memory. The entire movie plays like a demented live-action cartoon, presented by actors in anthropomorphic fur-plush costumes celebrating the gleeful pleasures of ‘looney-tunes’ slapstick comedy.

9. Head South
Luna Leederville
Head South opened Rotterdam Film Festival, where it won audience approval, and it’s easy to see why. This vivid and nostalgic comedy is a semi-autobiographical coming of age story set in the 70s post-punk era, making enthusiastic use of the era’s scrappy, hand-made aesthetic and featuring a killer soundtrack. The story follows a Christchurch teenager hanging out in the local record shop, dreaming of starting a punk band called the Daleks to impress an unattainably sexy girl.
