This extraordinary exhibition features paintings by Paji Honeychild Yankkarr, Daisy Andrews, Queenie McKenzie (Gara-Gara), Tjapartji Kanytjuri Bates, Tjingapa Davies and Pantjiti Mary McLean. The paintings have been reassembled from around Australia to restage Bush Women, 25 years after they were first shown. Living in diverse remote communities in WA the artists painted their culture and the narratives of their lives with authority and vigour, in strikingly individual styles.

Celebrated Australian artist Janine Daddo returns to Perth with a new exhibition with over 40 new original artworks. Janine has a natural exuberance for life and her use of evocative colours and bold textures evokes an enthusiasm of the little things that we all felt as children. Janine invites us to look again, lose yourself in the romance of life and celebrate the simple moments captured in her joyous paintings.

Amalia Pica investigates how we communicate beyond the barriers of language including research with apes raised in human households using Sign Language. The work that lends its title to the exhibition, Please Open Hurry is a reference to the Chimpanzee Washoe, who used this simple sentence structure to request to go outside her enclosure.

Lebanese born and Australian based Sabsabi works with photography, painting and textiles and is heavily informed by Sufi spirituality, his own experience of moving between communities and geopolitical factors. His latest work, A Self-Portrait, comprise 114 individual pieces, each consisting of seven different layers, signifying the seven different segments of the ‘Nafs’ (Arabic, Persian and Urdu for ‘the self’).

Now entering it’s last month, the exhibition of Clyde McGill's large scale paintings should not be missed! McGill’s sequence of beautiful but confronting mixed media works contain the story of a fisherman who died while his boat was detained in Darwin Harbour, within a much broader narrative of the refugees who arrive by boat.

As the last generation of cattlemen recall distant memories of dusty stockyards, saddle sheds, wet seasons, and those who passed before them, this exhibition explores the lives of those living and working on the remote cattle station of Gibb River in the East Kimberley region through the photographic image.

The exhibition highlights the disruptive influence of Marcel Duchamp, one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. On the 50th anniversary of his death in 1968, six locally based artists have been commissioned to create new artworks influenced by Duchamp’s legacy. Pure Land features Beausein’s artworks created with washi paper, indigo dye, embossing, woodcut, backlight and stitch. Pure Land is a direct translation of Japanese “Jodo” a branch of Buddhism, which Beausein has used to describe a place where the everyday becomes imbued with meaning and metaphor.

City of Melville gets its art on
Discover creative Melville! The annual Art Awards & Exhibition is the jewel in the City’s cultural crown; one in a calendar of events and programs throughout the year that the City is proud to facilitate. During the exhibition’s opening weekend, the City will also be holding its second Open Studios and Exhibitions Art Trail.
