If there’s one thing Perth can take pride in, it’s motorsports. From rallies to indoor events, we love our speed and now HBF Stadium is hosting the X Trial Australian Championships. It's motor sport - but not as you know it!
The biggest X Trial (not trail) event is a rider- invite only affair featuring the top six riders from outdoor championships, plus two wildcard riders. The riders hail from WA, NSW, VIC, SA and TAS, and are the best of the best.
X Trial Championships organiser, Neil Price, tell us the sport is celebrating its 40th year in Barcelona, and is now gaining momentum over here and currently Perth is the only place to see the event in Australia.
As a sport, it's exciting with plenty of thrills and spills as rider is pitted againt the obtsacle course.
Neil says audiences will be on the edge of their seats with incredible feats of gravity-defying trail riding and extreme displays riding capabilities.
Described as "WipeOut on a motorcycle", riders must negotiate three metre vertical faces, jump a spectacular four metres with no run up, and compete on a course with huge tyres, skip bins and a scaffolding setup designed to push riders to their absolute limits!
The sport demonstrates just how much skill is required to have complete control over the vehicle, and how hard the competitors train for such events.
X Trial is one of the most unique motorcycle events seen in WA and West Australian Neil Price is hoping to sell out of all 3,300 tickets available for sale.
"It's going to blow people away," he said.
"Unless you understand what the riders are capable of, it looks very dangerous.
"It's sort of like gymnastics- it looks incredible but all the riders are highly skilled."
Neil himself has been number 1 twice in Australia, and is competing as a veteran this year so he certainly knows the sport. He's passionate about it and is hoping to convert a large number of us along the way.
He will also be competing alongside Kyle Middleton from NSW, Chris Bayles from Tasmania, the Zarczynski brothers Colin and Kevin from NSW, Trevor Campbell from Victoria, Connor Hogan from South Australia and Callum Barton from WA.
The entire event is suitable for the whole family, with a kids' party from 3pm, featuring come and ride bikes, photo booths, and a chance to meet the riders before the competition. There will also be a great selection of food trucks to keep everyone satisfied.
