Top 5 picks at Perth International Jazz Festival 2021

The Perth International Jazz Festival (PIJF) makes its much-anticipated return to Perth this November 5 - 7 with a special series of performances in Busselton on November 13. Presenting an array of incredible jazz performances in the Perth Cultural Precinct, Hyde Park many other venues across Perth, the Festival features ticketed and free community events for you to enjoy! Festival Director, Mace Francis, has given us his top 5 events of this year's festival.

Tin Men and the Telephone

Tin Men and the Telephone is one of the most interesting and fun concert experiences you will experience! This trio (keyboard, bass and drums) from the Netherlands have developed their own app which allows audience members to interact with them in real-time, contributing musical and rhythmic information - no musical knowledge is required. This will be one of the few times that the performers ask you to get on your phone during the show. Download the 'Tinmendo' App ahead of the performance and be a part of the fun. Enjoy the show from the State Theatre Centre Courtyard, Northbridge Piazza or Yagan Square big screens.

Solo Acts

This year there will be two incredible solo acts. Both are very different but bring so much energy and excitement to a room. Scott Tinkler is one of the best trumpet players in the world and has forged a career and reputation on his individuality. To be in the same room as Scott when he plays his trumpet is something that can only be experienced due to his power, sound, creativity and energy! This will be a purely improvised concert and something that will never happen anywhere else, ever again. Adam Page is ridiculously creative, spontaneous, talented, and funny. He will make music out of anything, from strumming a ukulele with his enormous beard to shredding jazz on the tenor sax. With the help of an elaborate looping station, Adam creates improvised songs and creative cover versions on the spot with all the instruments he can travel with. He has been a hit at festivals all over the world and just completed a 24-hour solo gig in Adelaide - there is nothing this guy can’t do.

Our Lady of Jazz

Helen Matthews has been a huge influence on all the musicians in this town for decades. She was an incredible jazz vocalist and a force of nature when it came to making things happen! She had her own ABC TV show, toured everywhere, organised events, concerts and commissions and directed jazz festivals. Libby Hammer and Ray Walker have put together a band and dusted off Helen’s original sheet music for this very special event. Come and celebrate Helen's life in music and song.

Grooves n Brews @ Northbridge Piazza

Grooves n Brews @ Northbridge Piazza will be a space where you can kick back and enjoy grooves and brews from some of the hippest bands around. Explore what jazz is and what jazz can be via hip hop, funk and electro-pop. This will be a space where you can also enjoy the limited-edition Jazz Juice XPA especially brewed by Northbridge Brewing Co for you to sip on during the jazz festival weekend.

Grievous Bodily Calm

The festival will close with Grievous Bodily Calm, one of the most exciting genre-morphing bands to come out of Perth. GBC blend jazz, improvisation, electronic, synth-pop and raucous grooves to put on one of the best live shows you’ll see. You will be able to experience the band at The Rechabite.
