“From waxing to waning, the moon has entranced scientists, artists, poets, and dreamers for centuries.”
This exhibition serves as a time capsule, bridging ancient Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dreamtime stories to contemporary pop culture, from the Apollo 11 Moon landing to the iconic lunar footprints left by legends like Neil Armstrong. Blast off into a realm where humanity’s first lunar steps are reimagined, where jazz melodies accompany blue moons, and writers’ tales grace Hollywood screens. Open until October 28.
About the Exhibition
In 1969, humankind took one small step (and one giant leap), 384,400 km from Earth, to satisfy its fascination with the moon and celebrate a pivotal moment in space exploration.
This exhibition invites us to soar through the Moon’s hidden craters and enigmatic valleys. To the Moon goes beyond observation, showcasing the historical stories and artistic interpretations of this hallmark of the night sky.
Journey through space and time, where art, science, and digital mediums illuminate our understanding. Here, the secrets of one of the great symbols of our culture, are revealed.
Museum of the Moon
The centrepiece of the exhibition is an impressive scale replica of the moon and its surface, created by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven meters in diameter, the moon features incredible detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. Each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture represents 5km of the Moon’s surface, at an approximate scale of 1:1500,000*. This is the perfect photo opportunity, and a real stand-out of the exhibition.
Lunar Lounge
Blending retro vibes with cutting-edge technology, the To the Moon exhibition turns into a bar every Friday evening. Grab a cocktail while enjoying a line-up of expert talks and engaging activations, all while basking in the Moon’s glow under Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon.
