Cosmopolitan

31 Aug – 7 Dec 2019 This new exhibition, curated by Dr Sally Quin of the UWA Art Collection, presents works of 1930s Australian art – showcasing the diversity of artistic styles from the period and the strength of university’s collections. Introducing the exhibition, Dr Quin comments that “the eclectic and frequently enigmatic quality of 1930s Australian art is part of its appeal and its strength. It appears a far more stimulating response to global issues than the so-called heroic years of Australian art of the 1940s.” The exhibition features paintings, drawings and prints by a number of well-known and under-recognised Australian artists, including Elise Blumann, Lina Byrans, Grace Crowley, Ian Fairweather, James Gleeson, Nora Heysen, Frank Hinder, Ethel Spowers and Danila Vassilieff. The exhibition opening night will take place on Friday 30 August from 6pm, and a curator’s talk and tour with Dr Sally Quin will be held on Saturday 7 September at 2pm.

Here & Now 19: Material Culture

31 Aug – 7 Dec 2019 Since 2012 LWAG has exhibited some of the finest work of contemporary Western Australian artists as part of HERE&NOW, and this year the showcase has returned with five artists working in exciting and innovative ways. Curated by emerging artist Joanna Sulkowski, the gallery will be taken over by experimental works of textile material, and feature artwork by Ómra Caoimhe, Teelah George, Susan Roux, Holly Story and Marzena Topka. On the prominent use of textiles, Ms Sulkowski notes, “while fibres thread themselves throughout all of the works, each artist explores the material in unique ways, experimenting with it across installation, painting, drawing, sculpture and video.” The exhibition opening night will take place on Friday 30 August from 6pm, in conjunction with the opening of Cosmopolitan, and a curator and artists talk will be held on Saturday 31 August at 2pm.
