For those that aren't familiar with the World Surfing League, they are a global organisation dedicated to celebrating the ancient sport of surfing, managing more than 180 contests around the world. Their famous contests include the World Championships, where the best surfers in the world compete for the title of World Champion. With tours and events held in the world-famous locations such as the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii and Jeffreys Bay in South Africa, Rottnest Island has earned a place as a top spot on surfers bucket-lists.
Although COVID-19 has made spectator-sports difficult (and the beach will be closed to viewers), avid surfing fans can still catch all the thrills and spills with a live broadcast of the event. With major swell predicted for finals day (May 26), you can access the live stream broadcast here and see who will emerge from the surf victorious.
Although Strickland Bay will be strictly off-limits to spectators, the magical island nature reserve will still be open for visitors to soak up its unparalleled natural beauty, and unique fauna and flora.
WA is no stranger to internationally-acclaimed surfing pros, with the famous Margaret River Pro drawing the best men and women in the surfing world every year. With the competition being placed on hold for the past three years WA's surfing fans have been longing for a chance to jump back into the action, and now they can! Alongside Rottnest Island, Margaret River has also been added to the list of destinations in the World Surfing League's Australian leg of the tour - so be sure to also catch some of the excitement down south!
