Displayed artworks at Brans Antiques & Art this season.
1 Felice Tosalli
Lince Con Il Cucciolo | POA
Bronze, signed F. Tosalli, monogramed and numbered 5/x. Gold-brown patina, with areas of black finishing to the lynx.
Artwork | This exceptional bronze by Italian artist Felice Tosalli (Turin 1883-1958) is a small masterpiece, exceptional in form and in material, being the only model known to have been produced by Tosalli in bronze. Tosalli is instead better known for his outstanding sculptures in wood, his drawings, and his ceramics.
A strongly stylised but anatomically correct depiction of the lynx, stepping from one rock to another, carrying her pup, this seems to capture a moment in time, like a great piece of wildlife photography. It also captures the essence and presence of a wild creature, somehow displaying strength, poise and tenderness simultaneously. The quality of finishing on the bronze is superb, even on the integrated plinth, and is reminiscent of an Italian Renaissance master like Antonio Susini, or a Japanese Meiji period piece. The piece is illustrated in Alfonzo Panzetta's biographical work Felice Tosalli 1883-1958 (Umberto Allemandi & Co, 1989), alongside the creator's water-coloured working drawings.
2 Pippin Drysdale
