Nested in the rolling hills of the Blackwood River Valley is the charming town of Balingup, an easy 30km south of Donnybrook. Surrounded by farmland, orchards and forests, this vibrant town is waiting to show you its array of hidden delights.
The town centre is home to galleries and boutique shops, where you could spend a few hours finding those one-of-a-kind gifts. Pop into Tinderbox for essential oils and skincare, Gallery 18 for jewellery made by local goldsmiths and the Old Cheese Factory for woodwork, antiques and local crafts. The Village Pedlars is another arts and craft gallery selling homemade jams, felt wear and knitwear. There is certainly no shortage of local products, all made with love in this humble community.
We’ve been told the Mushroom Café (the home of award-winning pies!) and The Olde Shed Café are worth checking out when you feel peckish. For a little treat after lunch, the Balingup Fruit Winery is conveniently located on the main street and offers liqueurs and ports made from local apricots, cherries, plums and oranges. Yum!
After you’ve explored the townsite, head south about 2km to the Golden Valley Tree Park. Here you can bring a picnic comprised of local delicacies or take a leisurely stroll with over 60 species of trees from around the world. Qantas’ travel magazine actually listed this spot as one of the five best places in Australia to see autumn colours!
Accommodation options in Balingup include camping, family friendly cottages and scenic bed and breakfasts. The Balingup Heights Hilltop Forest Cottages have won multiple awards and offer breathtaking views of the area’s undulating hills. Check them out here.
