In a Perth first, the rare WA sand crab (or ‘Toe Nipper’) is being showcased on the menu of a four-course foodie event at Clancy’s Fish Bar City Beach on September 2.
From the icy waters of the Great Southern region, the WA sand crab is sustainably fished and will be brought directly to the City Beach venue, ensuring the catch is as fresh as possible. A one-man-band operation, Albany local Eric Tranthem is the only fisherman in WA licensed to catch the sweet-tasting crab, making it a rare delicacy. Since he was only granted a license three years back, this is the first time the crab has made its way to Perth. To make sure the reality matched the hype, Clancy’s executive chef Ashley Ryan made the drive down to Albany to help Eric pull crab pots and of course, have a sneaky taste. From there, the four-course menu was born, featuring:- Eric’s famous Albany crab dip with cream cheese, mango and chilli served with salted rosemary crackers
- Eight minute crabs, served with peppered vinegar and crusty warm bread
- Fried whole lemon myrtle crab served desert lime mayo on a banana leaf
- Thai yellow crab curry, chilli and coriander served with steamed rice
