Using a mixture of materials to construct this home has created an industrial-style design with a warm heart.
BUNBURY
A collaborative effort between D'Agostino + Luff Architects, Tallwood Constructions, and interior designer Lynne Sheen has created this modern family home that uses a combination of materials to achieve its striking appearance.
The clients wanted a robust home built with concrete, glass and steel to create a visually impressive structure that engaged with the street and took in the view corridors of the harbour and ocean. They also required upper-floor living, taking advantage of the elevation to obtain views.
By considering how the block and orientation would best provide locations for different building uses, the right balance of exposure to views – from both public and private areas – was achieved.
Following the clients' brief, the home is constructed using a combination of off-form concrete (natural colour), steel and timber frames, with commercial aluminium-framed windows. The timber-and-steel framed skillion roof form is lined on the rake through the main kitchen, meals, and covered outdoor areas to create extra volume and consistency with the home's roof form.
Over the main lounge area the ceiling is flat to provide a more embracing room shape. Polished concrete floors are featured throughout, with carpet softening the bedroom areas. The floor slabs are heated using in-slab hydronic heating which allows the home to be maintained at a constant temperature throughout the year.
An internal courtyard on the eastern side allows the bedroom areas on both levels access to natural light, while maintaining privacy from the street. Similarly, the covered outdoor meals area is partially enclosed using semi-frameless bi-folding windows to provide privacy and weather protection, allowing use all year around.
Below, the custom concrete pool was designed to wrap around the base of the building, providing a visual focus for the downstairs living space.
The owners are extremely happy with their completed home, and love that there is not a single square metre of wasted area.
