An imposing timber-lined roof demands attention from the street at this award-winning north-facing home designed by Peter Doggett.
WATERMANS BAY
Homeowners often opt to downsize when their children become independent, bidding farewell to spacious living zones and multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, in favour of a more suitably sized home for two. That did not stop the owners
of this beautifully presented abode from requesting a relaxed indoor and outdoor entertaining area that could accommodate their extended family get-togethers.
Architect Peter Doggett took this on board, and designed a spacious double-storey home that provided flexible entertaining options on the 500sqm site.
The large alfresco is deliberately positioned at the front of the home to take advantage of the northerly aspect, and to present vistas out to bushland in the northeast, all while offering privacy for its residents.
Crisp, sharp-edged aluminium composite panels, glass, and stainless steel details were contrasted against rustic granite blockwork, travertine paving and timber linings to create balanced and harmonious spaces that capture
the winter sun and summer breezes.
The soaring alfresco serves the dual purpose as the roof of the home, contributing to the elevation's dramatic silhouette, and sleeving the outdoor dining and kitchen space so it can be enjoyed all year round. The swimming pool was intelligently positioned adjacent to the window for a visual connection to the central living areas indoors. This includes the open-plan designer kitchen, featuring a stunning marble plinth and quality appliances. Glass bi-folding frameless doors were chosen to allow this free-flowing space to connect to the outdoors.
Large glazed areas are protected from the harsh summer sun by various methods, such as cantilevers, slotted aluminium awnings and wide-raking eaves, and the roofline defined by the aluminium composite fascia. Glazing in 6.8mm laminated glass offers acoustic and thermal insulation with enhanced security.
Peter also designed a large working office to enable the clients to comfortably run their business from home. Interior design was by Kim Doggett, and construction was by award-winning builder Dorrington Homes.
