At first sight, it is obvious why this home won a 2014 Building Designers Association of WA award.

MT PLEASANT

Lomma Homes set out to demonstrate that a luxurious contemporary 4x2 family home could be designed and built as a single storey on a 508sqm, 10m-wide block. If that challenge was not enough, Lomma Homes also sought to ensure that the design responded to the site's orientation, maximising solar gain in winter and minimising it in summer.

As you approach the home, a lowlight window at water level hints at the glistening pool beyond the screen wall. Once you step inside the front door you discover that the pool, which is fully tiled in Sukabumi stone, wraps around the house and is visible from all parts of the main living area, providing the main focus. The kitchen, with full scullery and a 4m-long island bench, flows into a generous dining area, and on to the family room.

The entire open-plan living space has soaring, raking ceilings rising up to an almost endless expanse of European double glazed windows, which are electrically operated to vent hot air in summer. The alfresco zone, accessed from the dining area, is complete with a full outdoor kitchen and is a great space in which to relax and enjoy the view of the pool.

The dark basalt floors which run through the home help to keep it cool in summer, and in winter soak up the northern sunlight and keep the home warm. The clever design, material selections, high-spec glazing and extensive insulation mean that the home is very stable and comfortable all year round, and would surely be a delight to live in.
