Toasties and jaffles have recently changed from home comfort food to a gourmet experience. Toastie bars have popped up all around Perth, but here are our picks of the top five places to get your hands on a loaded jaffle or cheesy toastie in Perth’s southern suburbs.
Toastface Grillah – Northbridge
Toastface Grillah have been grilling up toasties since 2013, and are so popular that four more locations have popped up across Perth. A crowd favourite is their Mac n Cheese toastie (topped with black truffle oil), but if you really want to indulge they even have mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers and chicken wings.
Melts – Fremanlte
Melts is a gourmet toastie bar in the heart of Fremantle that’s dedicated to grilling up delicious toasties of all kinds on buttered sourdough. One of their most eye-catching toasties is a slow-cooked beef cheek rendang toastie, with chilli sauce and topped with cheese. During truffle season, you can even get your hands on a three-cheese toastie infused with in-house truffle oil and truffle salt. Their toasties even come with homemade potato chips! They are open Monday to Friday from 7am to 2pm and Saturday to Sunday from 10am to 2pm.
Peggy’s – Fremantle
Peggy’s is a family run ‘Sandwich Servery’, whipping up sandwiches, subs, and of course, delicious toasties. They don’t do things small at Peggy’s; a seemingly simple cheese toastie includes four different kinds of cheese, from provolone, scarmorza, comté, and cheddar, and dusted with special kimchi salt. They are open for breakfast and lunch on Monday through Friday from 10am to 2:30pm, and weekends 9am to 2:30pm.
Little Sister Delicatessen – Fremantle
The Little Sister Delicatessen is a small deli counter best known for their artisanal cheese, charcuterie and antipasti, but you can also pop in for lunch and grab their hot grilled toasties. Grab their twist on a classic toastie, which features a whopping eight types of cheese, ham, and onion jam. All their toasties are finished with French butter, making them golden and crispy. They are located in the heart of Freo beside Kakula’s Sister, an international grocery store, which has been a part of the Fremantle community for over 25 years. The Little Sister is open daily, from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Saturday and 11.30am to 5pm Sunday.
Old Boy Café – Applecross
A short drive from Fremantle, Old Boy Café craft some of the best jaffles south of the river. The flavours range from traditional to much more interesting: you can’t go wrong with their ‘Usual’, a smoked ham, cheddar, seeded mustard; but if you like to try something different, they have a biltong jaffle, with cheddar and sweet chilli relish. The best part, is that they are pretty inclusive to most diets too, with the option to choose your bread, from white, wholemeal, and even gluten free, and four vegetarian jaffles. They are open Monday to Friday from 6.30am to 1pm, and Saturday 7:30pm to 12pm.
