The craft beer scene in Perth has gone from strength to strength over the past few years, and there are now close to 80 craft breweries scattered throughout WA.

The standard growler contains about two litres of beer, or just over four schooners’ worth, and are best enjoyed in one sitting with friends (or alone) as they tend to loose flavour and go flat. Most breweries will charge by the litre, so if two litres is too much, you can go for a one-litre ‘squealer’ or bring your own vessel and they’ll fill it up.

Several craft breweries will produce a special brew each year for the Great Australian Beer Spectacular (known in the industry as GABS). With this year’s festival being postponed, some of these brews have been released straight to market, so you know you’re getting something special if you get your hands on one of these.

Check out some of Perth’s best local breweries and craft beer halls offering growlers to go.

The Seasonal Brewing Co.

One of the newest craft beer venues on the scene, The Seasonal Brewing Co. opened up only last year in Maylands. With a rotating list of up to 12 beers at once, they come out with a new beer release every Friday, so keep an eye on their Facebook page to see what’s new to tap.

Head brewer Brody Watts’ pick of the moment is Modern Rustic, which was Seasonal Brewing’s entry into GABS. A red ale with lots of depth and complexity, the dominant flavours are pineapple and red berries, with pear, guava and spice characters.

Beer is sold by the litre, and you are welcome to bring in your own vessel or pick from their range. For those that just want to try before committing to a full jug, they will soon be canning of some of their most popular brews to go.

Open weekdays 4pm – 11pm and 12pm – late on weekends.

Bright Tank

Founded by husband and wife team Mathew Moore and Gemma Sampson, Bright Tank is a microbrewery, bar and restaurant located in the historic Boans precinct of East Perth near Claisebrook station. They constantly release a variety of small-batch seasonal beers and host regular quiz and social nights.

To ensure beer-lovers can still enjoy their brews at home, they are offering regular growler and squealer refills. They do ask that you bring your own vessel, as they don’t make their own in house just yet. Alternatively, you can opt for 500ml can. With a broad range of beers on tap, most popular sellers include their Honey Saison, which packs a honeyed punch at 7.5% ABV, or their spicy Ginger Beer.

Blasta Brewing Company

Gaelic for ‘tasty’, Blasta is the result of Steve Russell, and his years spent gallivanting around Europe and Scotland sampling beers. Russell opened up the Blasta beer hall in Burswood in March of 2018, and it has become a popular social hub for the local community

The team have just released a brand new beer called Exploratory Oatcream Beast IPA (6.5%), which is available for home delivery in 1.9L stainless steel growlers. If you already have your own, you can pop into the brewery for a refill to go.

Orders can be placed up between 11am until 7.45pm each night.

They have an impressive 26 taps, all of which are available for growler fill. Plus, they’ve got a great selection of funky beers available for purchase in their beer fridge, so pop on down and see what’s new.

Pirate Life at The Flour Factory

Although brewed in South Australia, Pirate Life has a big following here in Perth. Ahead of Pirate Life’s new three-storey venue opening in Perth scheduled for early this year, Pirate Life will be taking over The Flour Factory offering growlers of their brews. These can be ordered to go alongside food from The Flour Factory’s newly launched takeaway menu.

Beers available include their Pirate Life Easy Ale, Sour Mosaic IPA and Strate Amarillo IPA. Punters will also be the first in WA to taste their latest release, a Kakadu plum and lemon myrtle pale ale made in collaboration with hospitality group Sneakers & Jeans

The Pirate Life at The Flour Factory will be open for growler fills and food from Monday to Friday, noon – 6pm.
