We’ve all got New Year’s resolutions, whether we want to admit it or not – with ‘quit day’ (the day most people statistically quit their resolutions) being last week, it’s likely that most of us have fallen off the wagon already.

If you’re still looking for self-improvement, why not have a go at one of these Perth workshops and classes? You can learn a new skill, plus take home your creation so you can brag forever.

Get off the screens and get stuck into arts and creativity across the city with these top picks below.

The Sunshine Lane

Maylands

This vibrant creative studio in Maylands is home to a wide range of arts and crafts workshops, from crochet club to collage keepsakes and ceramics hand-building to pottery painting.

Each session is guided step-by-step, with no experience required. They’ve even got themed workshops – think R&B classics and nibbles while painting your ready-made pottery piece, or a summery school holiday workshop making a textured ocean painting with palette knives and impasto.

If a specific workshop limits your creativity, you can head to the Sunshine Lane for a $10 entry fee, choose your craft, pay for your materials and dive headfirst into your making, with staff nearby to help if you require it.

Jotterbook Flowers

Fremantle

Jotterbook is home to Perth’s first paper flower workshops – these are extremely popular, with workshops often selling out, so planning in advance is key.

With multiple different classes featuring different bouquets and designs, these workshops can be up to four hours long but are well worth the time.

You’ll carefully construct hanging poppies, wallflower decorations, functional flower lamps and more, meaning you take home not just the learning experience and creativity, but gorgeous decorations to be proud of.

Each session comes with food and drink to suit the occasion – wine and a savoury grazing platter, or matcha and mochi for the water lily ikebana class.

Studio P

Mount Hawthorn

Why not take the plunge and finally give wheel-throwing a go at this relaxed pottery studio in Leederville?

With classes to suit every skill level and lifestyle (they’ve even got 7-week courses!), you can’t go wrong in trying your hand at a new skill. If you’re up for the self-improvement challenge but not ready to commit to multiple sessions, intro workshops are the way to go, if they’re not already sold out, of course.

Coming up on Friday, 13 February, they’re hosting a collab with Si Paradiso, where you’ll build your own wine cup and snack bowl set while tasting exclusive natural wines. How does an early Valentine’s date night sound?

The Prospect Project

Osborne Park

If you’re after something unique, you’ll have to follow your nose and head to The Prospect Project for perfume and candle workshops.

Each create-your-own perfume workshop sees the exploration of 50 fragrance notes you’ll combine to make a custom 30ml eau de parfum. If that seems overwhelming, there’s no need to worry, as the in-depth questionnaire will help narrow down your ideas. Name and label your fragrance, and you’ve got a one-of-a-kind keepsake that your mind was behind. BYO drinks and unlimited snacks make this the ultimate girls’ night.

If perfume’s not for you, the Learn ‘N Burn masterclass allows you to take home your own custom candle, with over 100 kinds of vessels, fragrances and tints on offer. The excess wax is even donated to not-for-profit causes, making this workshop a win-win for everyone.

Izuba Jewellery

South Fremantle

This beachside studio in South Fremantle provides relaxed jewellery-making workshops, which are friendly for beginners and awesome for a group hangout.

Visit their charm bar and choose from hundreds of quality jewellery pieces and chains to make your custom necklace, bracelet or anklet.

Bubbles on arrival and the chance to shop Izuba’s exclusive in-store items will seal the deal for you – bookings are currently open for the month, but sessions are limited to eight people, so make sure you plan ahead!
